For hundreds of years the center of culture in Europe, Italy has strongly influenced the furniture designs of France and England. In fact, the earliest signs of the Renaissance began in Italy before 1500 and spread to all parts of Europe and England (enhanced by marriages among royal families). Rich Italians of the Renaissance wanted furniture to reveal their wealth as well as their artistic taste, which meant richly carved pieces. The motifs were often based on the sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome. During this period, cushions were built into the frames of chairs and upholstered furniture came into being. Fabrics of choice were velvets from Italy and Belgium, silks from France, leathers from Spain, tapestries from Belgium and France. Through the centuries, Italian furniture became simpler, but the best of the past has been retained in rich carvings, graceful lines, and beautiful inlays. At Holland & Company, the Italian influence is well represented with antiques selected from our travels through Tuscany, Umbria, and other parts of the country. And we always search for the unusual, the best in quality and style ~ just as we do when we select antiques from any other part of Europe. Complementing our selection of Italian antiques is a unique collection of furniture and accessories from Leone Cei & Sons of Italy, which is known world-wide for quality and beauty. Exquisitely hand carved in solid wood, according to ancient Florentine tradition, many of the pieces are finished in gilt from 24 karat gold leaf. For examples, see Accessories and Lighting.
